Title: Lifeguard
Reports to: Recreation/Aquatic Superintendent
Directly Supervises: Aquatic Center patrons

Nature of work
A City of Fairfield Lifeguard supervises all daily activities at the facility they are assigned for the day. The Lifeguard strives to maintain a pleasant, safe and sanitary environment while providing a positive swimming experience for the public. The Lifeguard assists fellow staff members in the operation of extra-curricular activities such as swim meets and rentals. The duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. The Lifeguard assists, supports and cooperates with fellow staff.
  2. Consistently enforcing all established rules, policies and procedures as directed by the City of Fairfield Recreation Division.
  3. Adhering to all personnel policies and procedures as directed by the Division.
  4. Showing respect for fellow staff members by treating them in a professional manner.
  5. Participating in staff training as needed.
  6. The Lifeguard strives to provide the best possible aquatic experience for all patrons while maintaining strong safety precautions.
  7. Enforcing all rules, policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner.
  8. Providing maximum supervision by actively roving the deck, guarding from the most effective location, or following assignments made by the manager.
  9. Preventing accidents by recognizing potential problems and acting to correct them.
  10. Giving assistance, making rescues and carrying out the Emergency Action Plan as needed both in and around the facilities.
  11. Demonstrating professionalism by acting as a role model
  12. Effectively dealing with comments, concerns, questions and special requests and communicating them to the Managers.
  13. Administering proper discipline as needed.
  14. Assisting with water chemical balance by periodically taking and recording result of reagent readings.
  15. Performing necessary procedures to guarantee proper cleanliness of the facility and surrounding area.
  16. Assisting Maintenance staff with daily operations and special projects as needed.
  17. Maintaining communication with Managers and Maintenance staff on current or potential concerns.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Obtain the certification/s under the job title
  2. 16 years of age
  3. Excellent people skills
  4. Responsible/honest/reliable
  5. Basic computer skills
  6. Ability to react to emergency situations

 Aquatic Superindent

Position Summary:

  • Oversees the operations of the aquatics department and programs, including aquatic staff supervision, budget management, and planning. 
  • Coordinates and supervises the day-to-day operation of aquatic programs. 
  • Maintains records, schedules staff, and ensures proper pool maintenance. 
  • Provides swim instruction and lifeguarding as necessary.
  • Reports directly to the Director of Parks and Recreation.

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Manage aquatic programs, complying with all standards and safety procedures.  Responsible for hiring, training, supervising and evaluating staff.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the aquatic center including budgeting, staff training and supervision, scheduling, tracking participation and evaluating effectiveness of staff and programs.
  • Assumes complete ownership over lifeguard coverage from opening to close. Be the primary point of contact for coverage related emergencies. Lifeguard schedule prepared 14 days prior to every month.
  • Plans, organizes and implements swim lesson program.
  • Responsible for indoor and outdoor pool maintenance and operations.
  • Prepare outdoor pool for opening by performing various start-up maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure safety of pool water by chemical testing on a regular basis and making necessary adjustments.
  • Provides monthly training to lifeguards on safety, communication, cleanup and other topics.
  • Develops, produces and disseminates appropriate program information in order to promote aquatic programs to the public and to current members. Includes creating and updating flyers in MS Word and managing files.
  • Provides a comprehensive schedule of programs/events on a year round basis. Includes program development and planning, budgeting, volunteer development, advertisement and event management.
  • Remains current with trends of aquatic programming and developing programs to meet the needs of members. This includes assisting in new business development, including planning and implementing new ideas in the department.
  • Maintains awareness of costs tied to department operations and be prepared to assist in developing and monitoring aquatic budget.
  • Meets routinely with the Director of Parks and Recreation, other programmers and staff as appropriate to coordinate effective provision of events and programs.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors aquatic department budgets.  Assesses and recommends budgeting for facility and equipment needs.
  • Ensures that program areas, equipment and supplies are maintained in an orderly and safe manner.
  • Promotes good will by greeting customers in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
  • Enables patrons to use facility by selling passes, memberships, and punch cards.
  • Maintains pool & concession supplies by checking inventories anticipating usage, and ordering appropriate supplies. Also to evaluate the concession stand to make sure it is profitable.
  • Enforces policies and procedures.
  • Administers the hiring, disciplining, & firing of lifeguard personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of swimming pool operations.
  • Considerable knowledge in the area of aquatic programming.
  • Ability to coordinate, plan and organize schedules, events, and programs.
  • Ability to supervise employees in an effective manner.
  • Skill in the day-to-day operations of aquatic facilities.
  • Ability to use considerable tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to lift objects over fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis.
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, email, file management, and aptitude for learning an event registration system.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Graduation from a College or University of recognized standing with a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or closely related field.
  • Preferred: Three (3) years of experience in the aquatic field with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Preferred: Certification as a Swimming Pool Operator by the National Swimming Pool Foundation. If not already obtained, must be completed within 6 months of start date.
  • Preferred: Lifeguard Instructor certification by the Red Cross. If not already obtained, must be completed within 6 months of start date.
  • Preferred: First Aid and CPR Instructor status certified by the Red Cross. If not already obtained, must be completed within 6 months of start date.

Working Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to outdoor and indoor environment, as well as regular exposure to hazardous chemicals associated with swimming pool operations.
